Your outdoor space is not just a place to spend time, it’s an investment into the environment and your collective enjoyment. With my garden design services, it is of utmost importance to bring your vision to life whether that’s due to starting up with a new garden, a garden redesign or a desire to bring together a luxurious garden transformation.
Taking care of your garden is incredibly important once the initial garden design and landscaping has been completed, and this requires particular care and attention for each differing area.
My passion for trees stems from their significance to us and the Earth, due to their provision of oxygen and how they can prevent soil erosion. Not only this, they soon become homes to many creatures and wildlife, while also providing a sensory display thanks to their blooms and fragrances.
As each garden is unique, every garden needs a bespoke care package. As a planting specialist, and given the investment you make into your home and garden, I can support you by arranging weekly or fortnightly visits from a member of my team to ensure your plants and trees are looked after correctly.
In this article, I have provided you with information you can refer to when you take care of your garden. For best results where I have been a part of the garden design process, I do recommend getting in touch so we can work together to ensure your garden remains as bright, colourful and joyful as possible.
Taking care of your plants
Overall, you should be mindful when watering your garden. Too much water can be too much of a good thing, and this can lead to root rot. This may require you to re-think your current watering schedule, and instead turn to checking your soil mix first to ensure it is dry at least 2 inches below the surface.
The best way to make sure you are watering your outdoor plants correctly, is to make sure the soil remains moist without soaking the plants entirely or letting them sit in puddles of water within pots and containers. You should then water again once the soil feels dry.
However, should you wish to take advantage of having a member of my team pay you a visit regularly, they will provide you with advice on how to identify if your garden needs watering or additional care so you are in the best position to continue with high quality plant care in between these routine visits.
Controlling weeds
Weed control is how you manage and limit the infestation of the weed plant, so your garden can remain luscious and picturesque. This includes the prevention of weeds, eradication and suppression of growth.
Weeds themselves can be controlled without resorting to weedkillers. Once your garden has been landscaped, it is preferable to leave weeds and minimise soil disturbance, as digging and cultivating can risk bringing hidden weed seeds to the surface instead of allowing them to lie dormant. Only weed seeds in the top inch or two of soil can get enough light to trigger germination.
You may be aware of an old saying, “Pull when wet; hoe when dry”. This is wise advice when looking to take on your weeds. After a significant rain, you should plan to take on a weeding session equipped with gloves, a sitting pad, and a trug or tarp for collecting your weeds. Many gardeners rely on a trusted kitchen fork for twisting out tendrils of henbit or chickweed.
When the weather and your garden is completely dry, weeds sliced off just below the soil line promptly shrivel up and die, especially if your hoe has a sharp edge.
Soil maintenance
Regular soil maintenance is of utmost importance to ensure the health and ongoing beauty of your garden. As a whole, maintaining your soil correctly helps to prevent the growth of unwanted weeds, to promote correct drainage and helps your plants to receive the necessary nutrients they require to promote increased plant vitality.
By testing and analysing your soils pH, you can use this information to help plan the appropriate actions to improve its quality. Adding compost or manure can enrich your soil with many nutrients, and incorporating sand can prevent waterlogging and promote healthy root growth.
Having nutrient-rich soil can be essential for maintaining a healthy and vibrant garden. It can help with retaining necessary moisture, promoting beneficial soil organisms and enhancing root development.
We take all of this into consideration when planning and designing your bespoke garden. We look into your soil type, learn from the local area and use the most beneficial soil mix to ensure your garden remains vibrant. With the support of one of my team members visiting regularly, we can make sure that your garden is blooming and remains beautiful all year round.
